Off-road Vehicle Navigation

Project goal is to demonstrate off-road navigation application on a laptop/tablet. 

Application should support selection of starting location, destination location and optional route points from a map. Used vehicle (with its off-road capabilities) is given as one input to routing algorithm. Routing algorithm should make its decisions based on available terrain info (e.g. open field, swamp, young/old forest) and used vehicle. Naturally the optimal routes in off-road terrain are highly dependent on used vehicle i.e. is the vehicle e.g. a mountain bike or a tank.

Visualization of proposed route(s) is another area to be demonstrated. As routing in off-road is a bit different thing as using roads it might be worthwhile to propose few alternative routes (in 2D/3D) to the end user. End user could then make ones decision based on additional info such as weather.

In addition to technical aspects on routing algorithm, visualisation aspects on UI and especially route visualisation there could be a place to study the case also from business case point of view.

Desired skills and competencies

Optimal team would consist of algorithm expert(s), UI designer(s), programmers and business analyst. Exact implementation platform can be decided based on team interest but final demonstration should run as a desktop application either on a laptop or on a tablet. Implementation should be done using Java.

Previous knowledge on GIS, maps and navigation would help the implementation.
