MyTerritory2 – Populate a world of music

Mobile devices equipped with GPS receivers and other sensors and connected to services with map data enable exiting location-based services to be built. One alternative of collecting data for location based services is to crowd-source information from users. In this proposal the goal is to crowd source music playing data which is used to populate a world of music. The world of music provides an exiting way of discovering new music, enjoying music and advertising channel for new bands

Project goal

The project goal is to design and implement a “world of music” service prototype. This includes mobile client and server side implementation. As basis of development the team uses the MyTerritory location-based game, developed during InnoSummer 2011. In the service, the goal of the users is to conquer areas (territories) by moving around them in various ways (walking, running, cycling, etc.) and selecting music to assign to that area. The way of moving affects how strongly the area is conquered, e.g. so that walking affects stronger and driving a car less since it is easier. Users can form teams or compete individually. When a user or a group of users conquers an area, the area on a map is linked with desired music. For example, to earmark a territory for a certain band, the team needs to travel around the territory while listening to the band or selecting the music from the UI. When other users enter the territory owned by a gang, they hear and see the music and signs of the dominating gang.
