The music world is in turmoil. The distribution of music is quickly turning digital and web-based and the power of traditional big record companies is weakening. More and more independent artists and record labels are releasing and distributing music via the web using various softwares and web-based solutions and applications thus cutting out the traditional record label as an unnecessary middle man. There is a myriad of different web solutions and applications available for distributing and selling music online.
Here’s the problem. According to industry specialists the distribution of music is quickly moving towards cloud services of which Spotify is the best known example. Instead of downloading a file to a computer or mobile device the listener can simply tune in to a streaming service, a cloud, and have access to a vast database of music and listen to a high quality stream, thus removing the need to own a huge memory or storage device to store music files. For the independent artist/record label Spotify and its peers are however problematic. The common consumer is unlikely to stumble upon the artists’ music in the vast ocean of music available. The independent artist and record label needs a more practical solution to offer their music to the consumer. Thus: Music Cloud.
The idea is to create a web-based application that combines a traditional download and merchandise webstore with a customizable cloud service and a social media application. This would give the independent artist, band or record label the ability to offer to their fans and customers their personal music cloud that holds their entire catalogue of music, videos and multimedia for a an annual or monthly fee. The customer would still have the option to download files or to buy physical products (CD’s, LP’s etc.) from the webstore. In addition to all this the fan/customer would have direct access to the artists and other fans via the social media application, share artists related photos, videos and other media.
To successfully create this application the project needs in its team experts of web programming, a graphic designer, a specialist in music marketing and a project leader whose primary function would be to ensure that the application is easy to use and functional to both the artist/record label and the consumer/music fan.
It is highly recommended that the team researches the most popular music distribution and webstore providers currently available. CDBaby, ReverbNation, BandZoogle, LiveDeck, TopSpin, Bandcamp etc.
