Current advances in 3D audio ,video and gaming, as well as, augmented reality stimulate the development of 3D devices targeted for the consumer domain. Majority of 3D displays currently available on the market can be divided into two categories. One, for which either polarized or shutter glasses are needed, and one for which no glasses are required. Both type of displays take advantage of the stereoscopic cue. They do not implement the other major cue, called head motion parallax. Effectively, the user observes a three-dimensional scene but when he moves his head there is no scene change as expected by the observer. This affects 3D experience of the device. Thus, the display which reacts on head motion can bring more value to overall 3D effect generated by the 3D display. Moreover it can be implemented also on traditional 2D displays, producing a 3D experience without any additional hardware
Project goal
During InnoSummer 2011, we developed a prototype that provides immersive 3D feeling using a Kinect sensor, example video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V92OLH6vlIo&feature=channel_video_title
In this project the students are asked to innovate on top of this prototype, but provide exciting applications that utilize mobile device communicating with Kinect. Some potential ideas include:
- A communication device that utilizes novel interaction methods enabled jointly by the touch screen of the mobile device and readings from Kinect sensor
- A video game that is highly immersive (similar to WiiU concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eniBUtc4Uws )
Desired skills
A group of 3-5 highly dedicated students with the following competences:
Mobile programming (Qt/QML .NET), Kinect programming experience, 3D design and modelling experience, game development experience
Development tools, environments and standards
OpenCV, OpenNI, libfreenect, .NET, Ogre, Qt/QML
Deliverables and time period
Concepting finalized: end of September
Initial prototype: end of October
Working demo: End of December
