Project 106: Business Challenge - Near Eye Display (head mounted see through display)
Background and motivation
Near Eye Displays (NED) offer a potential to overcome the screen size issue in the mobile devices. The display uses eye glass type of optics to project the display image directly to eyes, which enables viewing an virtual display image that represents approximately 40" to 50" screen size. The technology for NED is developing and Nokia Research Center has world class diffractive optics IPR and knowledge that could be used to produce a high quality NED products. One of the distinct benefits of NRC technology is that it enables so called see through displays, that can be used to project information on top of the real world view. This could be used for example in mobile augmented reality applications.

Project goal
The project goal is to explore see through near eye displays as a disruptive technology innovation in mobile applications. As the technology naturally fits in augmented reality, the majority of the use cases can be in this area and the display function is primarily an info display. Entertainment (movies, games) can be explored as a secondary supportive use case.
Expected deliverables include mainly use cases, with target market analysis and customer acceptance issues. Also information ecosystems and value chains should be analyzed.
